13 in 13 – A Review of New Years Resolutions

Well this year has been crazy for us. I can’t even begin to list all the major ways our lives have changed in twelve months. Going in to 2013, I really thought it would be a pretty boring year. How very wrong I was!

This year, we were given the precious miracle that is Baby Daniel, a few weeks early, but healthy and strong. I had a blood transfusion and was on no end of medicines while I healed up.

We bought a new house, which saw so many expensive issues arise right away that I was SURE we’d bought a money pit! We painted walls and cupboards, fixed broken tiles, flooded our entire front hall and had to replace the carpet, burst a pipe in our front yard while mowing the grass and eventually we had to buy all new appliances to replace our outdated and malfunctioning ones.

Summertime saw a bit of attention when a blog post I wrote about Dexter wearing a pink headband went mega-viral, and we became the center of speculation and nastiness from those who find it easier to believe the worst in people.

We visited my family in Pennsylvania for three weeks, enjoying life in the rural town I grew up in. We visited Mark’s family in Utah for a month, basking in the wonderful comforts of friends and loved ones.

We got married! In Vegas! By ELVIS! With only a week to plan it. It was spectacular.

We found out that Dexter is suffering from significant hearing loss, so we set out to get it fixed. It became a bigger problem when our doctor punctured both of his ear drums. But he had surgery just before Christmas, which hopefully has fixed the problem properly. We will find out next year.

And now the year is at an end, and I find myself looking back on all that I wanted to accomplish in 2013. I made this list of 13 in ’13 goals that I wanted to see through. And today is the day I figure out how well I did.

Read the 10 Most Banned Books – Sadly, I did not read a single one. I’ve read over 100 books this year, but not one among them was on the list. FAIL!

Devote Myself to a New and Healthier Lifestyle – I think I have done this in many regards. I may not have lost major weight (though I am 15 lbs BELOW my pre-pregnancy weight, so that is cool), but I have started taking my health and wellness more seriously. I’ve bought a bike, joined a gym and am getting better with food choices. SUCCESS!

Get Married (finally!) – We DID it! When I wrote this goal, I thought for sure it would never happen in 2013. Mark was against it, and I wanted to have the “perfect body” before walking down the aisle. But screw all that because we had the best wedding EVER. SUCCESS!

Big up my Mommy Bloggers G+ group – It turned out that this was not a big priority for me this year, however without even trying, I seem to have succeeded. My group has gone from under 120 members to over 1,900! SUCCESS!

Get to 1000 Facebook likes – I started last year with 450 people liking my Facebook page. Somewhere along the line, though, that number went way up. And I am SO grateful for all of them. I now have over 3,400 followers, and I appreciate them all. I’d love to see it rise again this year. SUCCESS!

Get Published – Well… there’s not much I can say about this one. I have written hundreds of thousands of words this year, including almost an entire novel for NaNoWriMo. I have not had anything traditionally published. However, our viral blog post from back in July was published all over the world in newspapers, websites, etc. It wasn’t what I was hoping for at all, but in the most technical way possible, this was a SUCCESS!

Write the First Draft of a New Book – Thanks to the awesomeness that is NaNoWriMo, I accomplished this goal. I wrote well over 50,000 words in one month to begin the first stage of getting published. It feels awesome. SUCCESS!

Get a Professional Family Portrait Done – Well we definitely gave this a go. When we visited Utah, Mark’s mom had a photographer come out to photograph the entire family, and a subset of that was just our little clan. It was pretty great, although we don’t have the photos yet. SUCCESS!

Go to Utah to Visit Mark’s Family – I’ve already mentioned this one. We came. We saw. We conquered! A whole MONTH in Utah! Huzzah! SUCCESS!

Try a New Sport (Especially One Mark Loves) – Ah bugger. Well you can’t win them all, right? I really did want to do this. When we went to Utah, we had every intention of going wakeboarding with friends. But it just didn’t happen. We thought we might be able to go snowboarding as the snow was starting to stick to the mountains by the time we left. But again, it just didn’t work out. We have had so many missed opportunities, and it makes me really sad to think this particular goal was not accomplished. FAIL!

Save $500 and Use it to Buy the Family a Present – I did it! I did it! In fact, I did it more than once! Through various work I did this year, I managed to save up lots of money to pay for various family treats. I am SO proud of myself. SUCCESS!

Print/Frame/Display Favorite Photos in Every Room – DONE! We have SO many walls (some 25-foot tall!) in our house that it will take a lot of time to get them all covered. But I have so many photos displayed in different ways in our house that I am really proud of. Mark thinks I’m a little crazy for constantly buying new frames and spending a fortune on printing even instagram photos… but I think it is SO worth it. SUCCESS!

Have a Makeover – I did everything I set out to do this year. I’ve grown my hair out (a minor miracle itself!), bought new makeup, and I even have some new clothes that make me feel good. Absolute SUCCESS!

All in all, I am very happy with the way my year has gone. To be sure it is one of the hardest years I’ve EVER endured. But we are not ever given anything we can’t handle, right? How was your 2013? Did you keep to your resolutions?
