I just ran my SECOND 5K this year. I am absolutely stoked to have done it, and I’m really astounded that I got through it with a time that is only SLIGHTLY behind my time from my 5K four years ago, despite the fact I am in WAY worse shape than I was then. It’s still not an impressive time, but getting out and exercising is becoming more important to me, and I am proud of any steps I take in that direction.
Still, one thing that I found that did hold me back from doing my best is that I wasn’t wearing the best gear for that kind of race. In the past, I’ve bought “workout clothes” cheap from big box stores, and the quality is severely lacking. They don’t fit well, they lose elasticity quickly, and they are not really flattering. Plus, they get soaked in sweat and require me to constantly readjust them while I’m running, and it makes it so much harder to work out effectively
In fact, I was so nonplussed by my clothes, that I decided to go ahead and wear a rainbow tutu and a unicorn headband while I raced! Granted, it won me the costume contest on the day, but it did nothing to help improve my time.
I feel like if I’m going to make fitness a priority, I need to invest in quality kit that will help me on my way. So the obvious choice was to find the best gear for my budget. I went with Champion GEAR exclusively at Sports Authority because I know it is a great quality, having bought near gear for my husband recently. #ChampionGEAR has Moisture Wicking Fabrics that are quick drying so you can not have to feel gross all the time. Living in the desert, I can’t tell you how important that is! It also utilizes exclusive seamless technology, high tech, luxury feel at a great value: “Seamless comfort. Pure Performance.”
After looking for the perfect outfit, I went with a pair of Champion GEAR Women’s Marathon Running Knee Tights. I LOVE these. They are really well made. They give great support (which is important as it keeps my flab in place so I can run!), and they have the moisture wick fabric PLUS an anti chafing construction so that I don’t get the dreaded “chub rub.”
I also chose the Champion GEAR Women’s Balance Loose Tank, which has a generous cut and a great racerback style. It has a fitted band around the bottom, so it stays in place and doesn’t ride up. But it’s loose and flowy, which means that I don’t feel like all my fat is on display.
What I REALLY like about these new clothes are that they can be worn any time. I don’t have to just wear them to the gym or out running. They are great for running errands or just living my life. As a busy mom, sometimes I put on my gear and then get sidetracked with twenty things my kids need me to do. But with these, I feel like I look stylish and READY for anything.
I’ve been trying to improve my mobility lately, so I’ve started doing little stretches and a little Yoga in the front yard. It’s kind of embarrassing if I’m honest. I live in a hip little village, so sometimes people are walking by looking at me like I’m crazy. But if I can’t get to the gym, or if I just want and need a little moment to de-stress, it’s kind of nice to be able to do it outside.
Now that I’ve got my gear sorted, I can’t wait to do another 5K. I’ve signed up for The Color Run later next month, and then I’m doing an Obesity 5K, where I get to wear a giant fat suit to run! And I MAY be doing a half marathon in October, but that’s up in the air right now. Whatever I choose to do, I am pretty sure I’m covered. I feel comfortable, supported and even kind of cute.
