In reply to Lynn H. Yes, the backs are open so that this can be reusable. If you didn't mind a one time use, you could cover back AND front and let kids poke holes in with a popsicle stick to get at the item inside. Otherwise, it's open backed for ease of use.

There are no instructions for where to place the items inside the paper rolls and no instructions for how to get the item out of the roll for each of the calendar days. Are the back of the paper rolls left uncovered and the items are removed from the back of the paper roll each day?
