I miss Florida. There, I said it! When we moved to the Sunshine State in 2012, I was over the moon. Finally a place that was full of heat, bright colors and activity! With beaches galore, theme parks, nature reserves and every kind of outdoor fun you can imagine, Florida is a smorgasbord of adventure! And nowhere in the state better epitomizes that sense of awesomeness than Gulf County.
I was checking out the Gulf County Adventure Guide and thinking about taking our next family vacation there. After living here in Utah for a while, I’m ready to go back to the state I love and really throw myself into the lifestyle.
I love the stories people tell. Like the one about the “Dolphin Parade” when a family woke up early and happened to see a whole pod of dolphins swimming and playing. They went out of their way to wake up early each day to catch those dolphins in action. I can imagine my children’s faces if we were to see that! It’d be a real life Flipper!
And as a passionate foodie, nothing would please me more than taking in some legitimately FRESH seafood. Especially if I was able to help catch it! There are some magical fishing spots in Gulf County, and the idea of bringing in the “catch of the day” is something that fascinates me. Getting back to nature and finding my own food? If I am drunk on the idea of it, I can only imagine how my husband and three little boys would react! And if we weren’t able to catch our own, the restaurants in the area are beautiful stand-ins, serving the finest fresh sea food available!
And I am DYING to go kayaking on the Dead Lakes. The Dead Lakes get their name from the Cypress and Tupelo trees that stand in the water. When the water is low, you can see the stumps rising out of the swamp. It’s an image that haunts me! I’ve read that if you go in early in the morning in April, you’ll see birds all coming into nest and other critters just showing up. The fog on the water lends an ominous tone, and I can think of nothing more thrilling.
One of my favorite pastimes when we lived in Florida was going biking through the nature reserves and state parks. It is so beautiful to be out in nature with the wind on your face. I would also love to try horseback riding along the beach. Snorkeling and paddleboarding are HIGH on my priority list. I am smitten with the idea of a vacation there.
And heaven help me, the absolute ultimate thing on my list is to experience a true Florida sunrise and sunset in the same day.
