We are a family that travels. We love it. Our kids, though young, are thoroughly used to long road trips, airplanes and seeking adventure wherever it awaits. It’s no wonder, really. Their daddy and I have both been all over the world, living in other countries and sporting more stamps in our passports than anyone we know. We met, fell in love and had a baby on a whole other continent!
Travel and adventure runs deep in our blood. And while we adore seeing the sights of far off places, this year we have made it our mission to explore our own back yard! We moved to Utah when I was 7 months pregnant with our third child (we drove across the country from Florida so we could show the kids more of our beautiful country!), and I was immediately put on bed rest for the duration. Once our baby was born, it was several months before I felt confident enough to explore our new home. But once I got out and about, you couldn’t STOP me from taking in everything there was to see!
We hiked to the top of mountains, we visited all our local parks. We drove hours away to visit National Parks like Zion, and we drove up into the Wasatch Mountains to explore the many hiking trails that surround us.
We even took a family vacation, along with extended relatives, down to St George where we spent time on a reservoir, jet-skiing and paddle boarding! Of course, my poor hubby was mortified when he got our van accidentally stuck in the rust-colored sand along the road. We ended up calling for a rescue, and it took several beefy men to push us out!
But such is life when you’re a family of adventurers.
In truth, before I met my husband, I’d been a very isolated person. I was living in a foreign country with no friends or family nearby, and I was too afraid to take advantage of that fact. When I met Mark, it was like he breathed new life into me. Within two weeks of meeting, he’d whisked me off to Amsterdam for a weekend of fun! That’s just the kind of man he is. And so began my love of travel and exploration.
I love that our kids have the chance to explore everything. Their little legs have carried them all over the place, climbing rocks, trees and hills like champions. Each new destination is an anticipation they can’t contain.
We’ve traveled highways and byways and skyways, galore, and whether it is a city before us or farmlands as far as the eye can see, they are enthralled with the beauty that surrounds them.
How lucky we are to be able to offer them the chance to see the world at such young ages. They aren’t even in school yet, and I’ve no doubt that when they finally enroll, they will have so many stories to tell their fellow students and teachers.
One of the questions we get asked a lot, due to our busy traveling lifestyle, is “how do you afford it?” The truth is that we are VERY frugal travelers. We always bring our own food with us. We’ve become masters at packing snacks for the car, as well as coolers full of perishable items that save us a fortune on eating out.
Our clothes, weather-appropriate gear and any sporting equipment we use is all bought second-hand from thrift shops or second-hand specialty shops. We figure it’s better to use equipment that’s already been broken in – it saves us lots of time (not to mention money!).
When traveling by air, we take advantage of deals we find. We try to book our flights during slow times, and we always offer to take travel vouchers in exchange for being bumped to a later flight. We use cash back and air miles on our credit cards. We will happily choose a 2 or 3 stop flight if it saves us a few hundred dollars.
And we always remember to use our Nitro Debit Card to fuel up before a big trip. The Nitro card is the awesome debit card from Maverik. It is super simple to sign up – just go to their website and enter your information. They’ll send you your card in the mail. It’s not a credit card – so there’s no credit check or annoying hoops to jump through. It is attached to your bank account, and you can simply use it to fill up at any Maverik you happen to be near.
Some of the awesome benefits of the Nitro card include:
- Save 6¢ per gallon on fuel – every gallon, every day
- Instant price match on fuel – Maverik matches the price of any qualified local competitor if it’s lower than the everyday 6¢ discount
- $1 fountain drinks (up to XL cups or 64-ounce refills)
- Earn 2x Trail Points and spend ’em to win stuff, buy stuff or give stuff!
- “Nitro Nights” — free access to movie premieres, concerts, and events when you present your Nitro card
- Get an instant $5 G-Card just for signing up!
It’s no wonder Maverik prides itself on being “Adventure’s First Stop.” Of course, as a mom of three little boys, I know that Adventure’s REAL First Stop is usually the potty…
But really… the secret to any great road trip is making sure you prepare. Maverik offers great deals and low prices, plus great rewards for its Nitro Card holders. And it is your one-stop shop for grabbing all you might need on a long or short trip.
Now make sure you fuel up and head on out because you never know what adventure awaits!
