This review has been a long time coming, let me tell you. I was sent a free kit of the Smile Brilliant at home teeth whitening back in SEPTEMBER last year, but with late pregnancy, a difficult birth, a new baby and everything else that has been getting in the way of life, I had a hard time getting the review done. Then, when I finally sent off my dental impressions, they somehow got lost in the mail, and I had to re-do the whole thing over again! Thankfully, the process was pretty darn simple. And because of my repeat, I was able to actually film the whole process for those who are interested! Wahey!
If you’ve ever done at-home teeth whitening with a kit you’ve found in your local pharmacy, you will know that they aren’t always the best. The teeth trays alone are a huge annoyance, as they are a one size fits all solution when we all know that every mouth is different. The instructions are usually quite vague, and the results aren’t always as good as you’d hope. But Smile Brilliant is a different kettle of fish.
First, they send you a kit full of everything you need to make your own dental impressions. This allows them to create teeth trays that are PERFECTLY molded to YOUR teeth. It means that the bleaching (if done correctly, according to directions) will not get everywhere on your gums, tongue, etc. It means the product can cover all of your teeth so that there’s even whitening all over.
The impressions are a breeze to make. I’ve done a walk through video here for you.
To give an overview, you simply fold two kinds of putty together, insert it into plastic trays, place in your mouth for a minute and then remove. It is RIDICULOUSLY simple. Then you send them back to Smile Brilliant in the helpful addressed and stamped envelope provided, and a week later you have your teeth trays. Then you can begin the process of whitening.
That process, too, is rather simple. The directions are all very detailed to help you through it. From how to prepare your mouth, how to place the bleach in the trays, how to clean the excess, how long to leave them in, and more. Then you can use the desensitizing gel to help make sure your teeth have all their minerals replenished. It’s a BREEZE.
Here’s another video for you so you can see the process there, as well.
So now that you know HOW it works, let’s talk about the results. Am I pleased? Well, yes, I am, thank you!
As an ex-smoker and an avid coffee drinker, my teeth weren’t badly stained or horribly yellow, but they definitely were not the nice white I would like to see them. Here’s a before picture so you can see for yourself.
Not awful but you can see that down near the gums they were quite yellow. After using the product only twice, here are my results:
There is a marked improvement, I think you’ll agree. I’d say there are a few shades different. I still have plenty of product left to use, as well, so there’s no reason for them to get yellow again, despite the many cups of coffee I imbibe!
So here’s the good stuff:
- It’s super easy to use. Both making the impressions and actually whitening the teeth are simple processes
- The product works. I saw definite improvement
- The teeth trays are comfortable and don’t inhibit you. You can speak pretty well with them in, and it’s easy to forget they’re there.
- The instructions are clear and easy to follow
Here’s the less good stuff:
- If you have sensitive teeth, you might notice a tad more sensitivity. I noticed only the TINIEST worsening, and it went away after a day.
- If you don’t clean the excess bleach off, it WILL aggravate your gums. I had a tiny burn on my bottom gumline because I was careless after my second treatment. It went away in 24 hours, though.
- If you’re in a hurry, this might not be the plan for you. You will have to send in the impressions and wait for them to be returned, which can take up to a week. Make sure you plan.
- My kit didn’t come with any sort of tooth chart so I could compare shades, but you could probably find one yourself.
All in all, I have to say that I’m totally impressed with this kit. I can honestly say I’d recommend it to anyone who has good dental health and wants to see some improvement. I’ve been told that this works really well on stains and really yellow teeth and isn’t as impressive on teeth that don’t really need it. But mine weren’t that bad, and I still saw a great improvement, so I’d say it’s worth its weight in gold for those who are self conscious about the state of their teeth.
