Okay, so even though I have happily breastfed two babies already (for a year and a half each, no less!), nursing my new little guy the past week has been a new and crazy experience. I’ve been very lucky in the past to have no problem getting my kids to latch on, and doctors have always been amazed at how fast my babies grow under my miraculous “boob juice.” (Yes, I went there…) In fact, while Dexter was happy to go back and forth between bottle and breast, Daniel was only ever happy with “the real thing.” Until he was nearly a year old, he flat out refused a bottle, be it breast milk or formula. It was exhausting at times, but we got through it, and he’s now a very independent little boy.
So this time around, while I was determined to breastfeed Chester, I also had it in the back of my mind that I wanted his daddy to be able to feed him, too. It’s great to get a break once in a while – especially with some of those late night feeds when all you want to do is
cut off your own boobs sleep because the thought of one more feed is more than you can bear. So when the awesome folks at Ameda contacted me and offered me the chance to try out and review their amazing Purely Yours breast pump, I jumped at the chance.
This great breast pump is portable and lightweight, making it convenient to transport. It includes the following:
(1) Purely Yours Breast Pump
(1) Dual HygieniKit Milk Collection System (without BPA and DEHP)
(1) Microfiber CarryAll Tote shoulder bag
(1) Cool‘N Carry Milk Storage Tote with 3 cooling elements
(1) Milk storage guidelines card
(6) 4 oz./120mL milk collection bottles with lock-tight sealing lids
(1) Instructions for use
Okay, now look – I’m not going to lie. If breastfeeding is hard, I think it’s safe to admit that pumping is not a lot of fun, either. A baby uses his soft tongue and lips to gently and firmly suckle at your breast in such a way as to be not entirely unpleasant (and even quite nice once you get in the groove of it!). But a pump is a bit of hard plastic with no lubrication and a very mechanical suck. Using one can often feel like being a dairy cow on a farm. There’s no beautiful baby to look at, there’s no sweet baby smell to help your milk let down, and there’s certainly no warm little body to cozy up to.
But if and when pumping is necessary – for instance, if you have a baby who isn’t feeding well – I can’t speak highly enough about the importance of having an easy-to-use, powerful and portable pump.
Right now, Baby Chester is suffering from some pretty bad jaundice. As a result, he sleeps A LOT and is difficult to wake up to get to feed. Trying to get him to nurse has not been easy. But after using the Ameda Purely Yours pump, I am able to give him tiny bits of real breast milk through a syringe or bottle or even a little cup. It is easy to sneak it in while he’s asleep because my milk suddenly becomes portable.
There are many reasons a mom would choose to use a breast pump. Whether she has to go back to work or she wants her partner to be involved with the feeding, having a pump on hand makes it easy to ensure you always have the milk you need. Breast is best, but that doesn’t mean you have to be attached to a baby at all times.
And there is even some great news for those who are with United Healthcare. Target has teamed up with UHC and Ameda to help you get a breast pump of your own. Go into your local Target, pick up a Purely Yours Carry All from the shelf, bring it to the pharmacist and they will verify your benefits, bill your insurance and you get to walk out with your pump the same day! Read more about it here.
But I have one more piece of awesome news for you, too! Those lovely Ameda folk aren’t just content to let ME try this awesome pump out. They want to give one away to one lucky reader, as well!
