A few weeks ago, the amazing people at Hyundai offered to send me out one of their beautiful 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs to review, and I literally JUMPED at the chance. Mark and I have been discussing the possibility of buying a new car, and I have loved the Hyundais I’ve driven in the past. So we did our best to put it through its paces and take it on adventures big and small.
The first thing that I noticed, and I KNEW the kids would love, was the incredible panoramic sunroof! I’ve never seen one that was so big! As soon as I picked the kids up from school, I opened it up and noticed how excited they were. It was like driving an SUV convertible, if such a thing existed, but without the worries about weather! It let in a ton of sunshine, and – when opened up – loads of fresh air.
The interior was so spacious, you wouldn’t believe it. It had plenty of leg room, which is a big deal since there are five of us, and none of us is particularly short! I love being able to stretch my legs, as well as spread out a bit in the car. Driving was so much easier with all the extra room, but I really loved being a passenger. Leaning back and staring out the sunroof and just enjoying the smooth ride was amazing.
The vehicle itself was beautiful. While larger than our normal car, it still managed to feel somewhat demure, which I really liked. It was beefy enough for my hubby, but girly enough for my tastes. As mentioned, it had a ton of space inside. My kids loved it, as they each had plenty of room to enjoy.
Since it was the beginning of autumn, we thought we’d head up into the mountains to have a family picnic. Since the terrain around these parts is so different depending on where you go, we thought a good drive up through Big Cottonwood Canyon would mean we’d get a real idea of how the car handled. We grabbed the kiddos and a packed lunch and drove up, stopping often to check out the scenery.
As we went on, the weather began to change. You can imagine how excited the kids were when the green and yellow we were used to seeing suddenly changed to a lot more white! It was SNOWING!
I was actually excited, too, if I’m honest. Not just because I enjoy playing with the kids in the snow, but because I knew it would be another great test to see how the car handled. Our own car often has trouble when dealing with snow in the mountains. It can get quite slippery, but I was confident that the All Wheel Drive in the Santa Fe would hold up. And I was right! We had no trouble with the slippery, wet roads. Just smooth control and an uneventful ride.
Once we made it to the top, we headed for Silver Lake, a favorite picnic spot for our family. But our plans were scuppered quite quickly when we saw the amount of snow that had accumulated! Our picnic would have to wait!
In fact, we’d not prepared very well at all, as none of us was really in weather appropriate gear. We lacked good boots, and two of the kids didn’t even have a coat!
Since the boardwalk surrounding the lake was icy and snowy, we couldn’t even try taking a family walk. We settled instead for a quick play in the snow. Without gloves it was not a ton of fun for the kids, but they persevered and continued to play.
When they became a little too cold, they started to want to be held. Mark and I were carrying them around because they didn’t actually want to LEAVE – they just wanted to steal our warmth! We really should have been more prepared, but we just didn’t expect that amount of snow so early in the year.
Eventually, after about 20 minutes of fun and frost, with our picnic plans gone, we decided to head back home. The sun was just starting to set, and we figured we’d have some spectacular views on the journey home. We couldn’t have been more right! Going down the mountain in the Hyundai was AMAZING. With the panoramic sunroof, the views were stunning.
We stopped a few more times on our way down to take in the scenery. The kids decided to stay in the car, where it was warm. After the first stop, Mark stayed in there with them, too cold to persevere. But I was determined to document the beauty all around us.
It should be no surprise to anyone when I say that the Santa Fe took the roads extremely well. We had no trouble navigating the tricky roadside stops because the Santa Fe comes equipped with a 360 degree, multi-view camera system to help you. It was another amazing benefit of this vehicle. The available 8-inch touchscreen navigation system offers voice-recognition. And SiriusXM Travel Link® gives you updates on current traffic, weather, stocks, sports, even movie times, all in real time. Basically it is my perfect dream family car!
There’s not a ton left to say about the Hyundai Santa Fe. But I did want to speak toward the one thing that means the most to me in a car – the safety features. As a mom of young children, it is really important to me that a car is high-rated for safety. The Santa Fe includes Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross-traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist. All of these things are above and beyond what a normal car would have, and it made me so much more confident that it was a perfect car for a family like ours.
I’m not close to kidding when I say that we are really wanting to buy one once we have paid off our current car. I can’t recommend it more.
