I recently shared the story of how I fell in love with Payless again when I realized that you can get amazingly on-trend shoes for a fraction of the price of other outlets. I got some killer shoes for myself to jazz up my holiday outfits, but even though I didn’t spend very much (yay sales!), I started to feel guilty about indulging in shoe shopping only for myself. My guilt was exacerbated recently when a well-meaning relative made a comment about my kids having really smelly shoes.
Okay, so here’s the truth. I grew up with a mom who NEVER wore shoes. She grew up in California, and although we lived in the cold winters of Pennsylvania, she was a flip flops girl through and through. She never owned socks, and I grew up never wearing any either. While my boys get new shoes whenever they need them, I must admit that I have kind of a lax attitude about hosiery. In other words, my kids’ feet stink because they don’t wear socks. That’s a bit of a big oops.
To rectify both the sock situation and the stinky shoe situation, we headed to our nearest Payless to have a gander on their offerings for the pre-school age. I fully expected them to be more expensive than the shoes I’d recently bought myself. What is it about kid shoes that make them SO overpriced, anyway?? It drives in nuts to pay $50 for a pair of shoes for each kid only to have them outgrow them within a month or two. And due to the aforementioned “stinky shoe” situation, hand-me-downs are kind of a bad idea…
You’re judging me, aren’t you?
Anyway, into the store we went, and I figured we may as well get their feet measured. Dex has been complaining lately that his shoes are too tight, Dan has been having trouble getting his on, and Baby Chester has never actually had a pair of shoes in his 13 months on earth. We were waiting until he started walking, but since that hasn’t happened, we figured we may as well get him a pair before winter sets in.
Amazingly, their feet had only grown about half a size, and we were told we could go up a full size if we wanted to in order to help them last longer. I had the kids explore the aisles looking for the “perfect shoe.” Dexter had one request before we got there. He wanted shoes that light up. I guess he has some friends that had light up shoes, and it was weighing on his little mind that he didn’t. So that was what we looked for.
As we looked around, I spotted the perfect pair for Daniel. He’s nearly three, and he’s super obsessed with superheroes. He LOVES Marvel, and there was a cute pair of velcro Avengers Lighted Runners. I immediately knew he’d love them, but before I called him over, I checked out the price. In my mind, I kept trying to calculate what I’d be willing to pay for them. No more than $30, I thought to myself. Amazingly, they were only $15! And even at full retail, they were under $25!
As expected, he was thrilled, and I thought, one down, two to go.
Chester was pretty simple, too. A big fan of Sesame Street, we were immediately drawn to the Elmo Casual Sneakers. Again, I quickly guessed that these would be around $25, but amazingly, they were only $14.99! Two down!
As I was exploring the infant shoes, Dex came running up to me saying he’d found his shoes. He held out some black Star Wars themed shoes, and I threw a look at my husband as if to say, “This is your doing, isn’t it?” He laughed at me and just said, “They’re cool shoes. Dexter loves them.” I prepared myself to look for a price tag, but I quickly realized something. These shoes didn’t light up! I knew how important it was to Dex to have light up shoes, and the fact that Daniel’s new ones would be light up was bound to cause jealousy. So I led the boys back over to the young boys section and scoured the shelves until I found a different pair of Star Wars themed shoes that DID light up. They were the Kylo Ren Lighted Runners, and they were only $26.99!
I was excessively pleased with our finds, and I knew the kids were, too! You really can’t beat the price tags on cool character-themed shoes!
At the last moment, I again remembered the reason we were here. Stinky shoes. I quickly looked around the accessories section until we found where the socks were kept. The helpful sales lady told me that all socks were 30% off! I thought it must be fate that we came to this store for our shoe-shopping, as the socks had a very familiar name on them!
Once back home, the kids had a ball trying out their new kicks. They were running all over the house practicing how to get them to light up on command. They worked up quite a sweat, I’m sure, so thank heavens for new socks!
Even baby Chester loved his new shoes, despite never having worn any before. Maybe it’ll inspire him to actually start walking!
