The holidays are over, and with the new year, opportunities for gift giving are fewer. Sure there’s Valentine’s Day around the corner, but that’s all about romance and obligatory I Love Yous. I’ve never been a big fan of societal pressure to show I care with a forced gift giving day. I’d much prefer to surprise someone I love with an unexpected surprise. Or even an expected delivery made special with a little bit of effort.
Such was the occasion I had this week to do something nice for my husband. As you can imagine, he works very hard to ensure our family is not only financially secure but also that everyone feels secure and comfortable in our home. As such, he has a Honey Do List a mile long with tons of little jobs that need doing. From fixing the leaky roof to getting the basement to stop flooding, he is always tasked with those things that I just can’t manage myself. So when he sent me out for a few supplies for his latest DIY project, I wanted to do something special to show my appreciation.
I went to Dollar General because it is one of my very favorite places to shop. It’s not just some all for a dollar store. And it’s not just a junk shop. It’s actually got a little bit of everything you could want. From basic groceries to snacks and drinks, from clothing and shoes (I may have bought myself a new pair of boots while I was there!) to cleaning supplies, and everything you could need for home organization, arts and crafts or even a bit of DIY. I knew it’d be the perfect place to find the items my hubby requested AND do a little something special for him.
I found his requested items fairly easily. He was after some spray paint, a few putty knives, a padlock and some paint brushes. Easy enough. They all could be found in the same general area of the store.
Of course, the DIY section was RIGHT next to the arts and craft section, and since I’m currently re-doing my craft room, I found a bunch of really cool items to add to my collection, too. I guess that’s the danger when you go to Dollar General – you will ALWAYS find reasons to spend your cash!
I thought about adding this book into the gift basket I was creating, but I wasn’t sure he’d get the joke – I am the perfect woman, after all, right??
After I’d found everything I wanted, I paid for my items and headed home. I knew Mark would want his items pretty quickly, so rather than go straight to him, I headed down to the basement and put together his gift.
Besides his requested supplies, I also bought a cute wicker basket to put it all in, as well as a bottle of his favorite soft drink and a couple of chocolate candies to give him extra energy while he was working on his project. The end result was a REALLY inexpensive and fun gift basket that he was THRILLED with.
The total cost was amazing!
3-pack of Paint Brushes – $3.00
3 cans of Enamel Paint – $9.75
3-pack of putty knives – $1.00
Padlock – $3.00
Drink – $1.60
Chocolate – $1.00
Wicker Basket – $5.00
Less than $25 to show my guy how much I care on a day like any other. No special occasion. No birthday. No anniversary. Just my little way of making something he has to do anyway that little bit more enjoyable for him and remind him that I appreciate his efforts.
Next time you want to go the extra mile, I can’t stress enough how much you will love this store. I’ve been going there since I was about 9 years old, and it remains one of my favorite places to shop. AND you can Shop online and save with Dollar General!
