If you’re a long time reader of this blog, you may remember back in 2012 when I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, when living in the UK. It was at that point when I had to really start being careful of what I ate and how things were prepared. Knowing that I had a disease that could kill me was a big bummer. What was also a big bummer was the absolute dearth of gluten free products. If I wanted a cookie, I had to make it myself, and most of the time it turned out pretty bad. Learning how to use various GF flours and things was a major turn-off, so for AGES, I just ate plain veggies and meats. Even the gluten free products that DID exist were pretty dire.
Then, in early 2014, I was re-tested for the disease, and I found out that I DIDN’T have Celiac at all! I was gluten intolerant, but eating it wasn’t going to kill me! I was over the moon. I went home and ate a big bowl of spaghetti. And then I immediately regretted it. It turned out that gluten still wasn’t my friend, and I still had to be pretty careful about what I ate. Thankfully, though, in the last few years, especially since moving back to the US, there have been amazing innovations for those who need gluten free products. There are some amazing brands making amazing products, and I am SO thankful. You can now go into most grocery stores and find a gluten free section. It is AWESOME.
So when I was asked to go to Walmart and visit them last weekend for their gluten free event, I was only too happy to go. My oldest son, Dexter, was suffering from a bad ear infection, and he was really being a champion, so I promised I’d get him a treat if he continued being a good boy. So he came with me and ate about fifty free samples! His favorite was the GF Chocolate Chip cookies! Big fan there! I tried one, myself, and I was seriously impressed. They were really yummy!
Once we’d had our fill of samples and after a nice chinwag with Linda, the demo lady, we headed back down to the GF aisle and had a look around. I told Dexter he could choose any one GF product he wanted, and I’ll admit I was really happy when he chose the Nature’s Path granola. Of course, he didn’t seem able to decide between the Honey Almond version or the Dark Chocolate Berry version. So we got both!
I can’t wait to have a go at creating a yummy recipe with them!
