Back to the Future has long been one of my favorite movies. It was a staple of my childhood growing up, and we watched it dozens of times over the years. Any kid of my generation can quote the movie pretty much verbatim – it was and is a classic story of time travel. In fact, it was my first real experience of the sci-fi genre, even though it didn’t much feel like traditional science fiction!
Now that I’m older, I LOVE me some sci-fi. I raise my kids on it. Whether it’s Star Trek or Star Wars, Doctor Who or Harry Potter, we love anything that pushes the boundaries of what is possible. In fact, my oldest son, Dexter, is just about ready for his first viewing of Back to the Future. He’s at an age where he understands the world a little better and can actually sit through full length movies without too much trouble. So how exciting that it is time for the 30th Anniversary re-release of the Back to the Future series?!
In fact, aside from the October 21st, 2015 re-release of physical and digital copies, the films are also receiving a national theatrical release!! That means we can take our son to see it on the big screen! There will even be additional live events from Universal and fans, as well!
Do you know the significance of October 21st? That is the day that Marty travels forward to in BttF II! While we have no hoverboards quite yet, I remain confident that if Marty could see us now, he’d still be mighty impressed and confused!
The Back to the Future series was a worldwide cultural phenomenon and the highest-grossing film of 1985!. It launched one of the most successful franchises in Universal’s history, with two sequels, an animated tv series, a theme park ride, toys, comics, video games and apparel!
With time travel stories being a hot commodity right now, it’s always fun to see how shows like Doctor Who have been inspired by Back to the Future. Like for instance, Doc Brown marries his companion, Clara… Kind of like Doctor Who shacking up with HIS companion, Clara…
Or how about you watch DW episode, Rose, where there is a discussion board of people tracking sightings of The Doctor, and one commenter exclaims, “I know that man! He stole my DeLorean!”
There are other similarities, as well! Check out this infografic I made.
There are so many similarities between the two series, which is understandable given the subject matter. But there is something about Back to the Future that will always come out on top in these sorts of comparisons.
So when it comes time for the re-release, don’t forget to jump in your car and hit 88 miles per hour to get to the store and buy your copy on Blu Ray. The special edition will knock your socks off!
