Every year since I was small, I’d get a little sad around Christmas time. It was only once I became a mother that Christmas started to take on a bit of magic and excitement. Having kids changed my holiday outlook, and this year is actually a little EXTRA special. You see, my fourth baby boy is due on Christmas Day.
Our family traditions over the last few years have changed a lot. Our first holiday as parents was in the UK, far from family and friends, with just my husband, myself and our first baby. It was quiet and subdued, but it was beautiful because we had someone in our lives whose happiness meant more than anything.
By next Christmas, we had moved internationally and were now living in a tiny apartment in Kissimmee, Florida. Once again it was just the three of us, but the big difference was that I was seven months pregnant with our second son. Pregnancy made me tired, and our planned trip back to see my husband’s family had to be cancelled at the last minute, as I wound up getting put on bed rest six days before Christmas. As a result, our holiday plans were all last minute and involved going to a restaurant for a turkey dinner. But still, we made the most of our son’s second Christmas, buying a tiny two foot Christmas tree for him and making sure we got some presents wrapped.
Christmas with two kids was even better. Our third Christmas as parents was held in our very own home, which we had bought earlier in the year. We were able to fill the house with decorations, we had a nine foot tree, and we spent the days and weeks leading up to the big day creating Christmas ornaments, singing carols and visiting parks to see the huge light displays.
Once again, everything changed the next year. Our fourth Christmas gave us an unexpected blessing. Just after my second son’s first birthday, we found out we were expecting our third! With three kids on the radar, we knew it was going to be important to move closer to our family. That summer, we headed across the country, moving from Florida to Utah. Our son arrived late in October (several weeks early!), and that is when our most treasured Christmas tradition was born – we began taking yearly photos of the boys at Christmas.
Having three kids at Christmas seemed like the most magical thing ever. Our caroling, decorating, and visiting light display traditions continued, but I wanted more. I wanted undeniable magic to excite the boys.
Once again, the next year involved moving into a new home – this time our dream home with PLENTY of room for Christmas memories.
We began adding in a certain special guest for the kids that year. He arrived the night we put the tree up, and he brought a very specific type of present with him – namely holiday pajamas for each boy.
Set out below the fireplace would be a pair of Kohl’s Carter’s pajamas in the correct size for each child. Their faces would LIGHT UP seeing them, and they were overjoyed at getting an early present. Those pajamas would be worn several nights each week in the lead up to Christmas, and the kids would go crazy with excitement every time they wore them.
Having holiday pajamas has become the most expected gift of the year with these kids. And this year is no different. When the tree goes up, they know their little friend will arrive with a new set of PJs, perfect for them.
This year, I went straight to Kohl’s to check out their amazing selection of Carter’s Kids Pajamas. Their Destination Dreamland collection has new color schemes and holiday schemes with jammies in Baby, Toddler and Little Kid sizes. In short, they are perfect for each of my kids – including the new baby who will be arriving just in time for the big day!
Since we live in a cold winter climate, it’s important to me that my kids have nice warm jammies in cotton, polyester or even fleece. I love that their footed jammies have non-skid soles (important since we have slippery wooden floors!), safety tabs to keep the zippers in place and elastic back heels to keep footies on. For girls, they even have matching nightgown and doll gown sets!! How cute is that???
I managed to find some incredibly cute options for my boys (I may have bought more than one pair for each kid, as well as a newborn piece for the coming baby!), and as expected, our holiday elf was there to present them just after Thanksgiving.
The boys immediately put them on and looked so cute that I insisted on snapping photos for potential holiday cards. I can’t believe how adorable they all look!
In front of a roaring fireplace, curled up watching holiday films and anticipating the coming weeks with total excitement and love, I can’t help but feel like my joy is palpable. I can literally feel it swirling through the air.
And more than that, I think to the future. Next year, we’ll have four gorgeous little boys filling the house with Christmas spirit as they sing, decorate, craft and pick out the perfect presents for one another. There is literally nothing better in my mind that the brotherhood I see each and every day from the kids who are SO close.
