How to Win More Battles at Gyms on Pokémon Go

Part of the fun in Pokémon Go is taking over the gyms in your area. To do this, you will have to battle with other trainers and secure the gym. Once you win, the gym becomes your team color and you can leave a Pokémon there to help keep the gym for your team.

Below are a few tips that will help you win more battles in the gyms so you can gain more XP and take over more gyms!

Fight with your Best Pokémon

You can take six Pokémon into a gym battle. Make sure you have the six with the most combat power (CP). You can see what CP the Pokémon currently holding down the gym have, so you can determine what you need in order to win. The more CP your Pokémon have, the longer they will last and the more likely they are to win.

Power Up your Pokémon

If your Pokémon have lower CP levels than the Pokémon currently holding the gym you want to take over, power up your critters until they are ready for battle.

To power up, you have to have enough stardust and candies that each Pokémon calls for. Take this Arbok, for example.

He needs 1600 stardust and 2 Ekans candies to be powered up. You can get more stardust by catching more Pokémon. You get the specific candies by catching more Pokémon, hatching eggs with those Pokémon in them, or transferring that type of Pokémon to the professor.

Don’t Forget to Evolve

Evolution in Pokémon Go is very helpful if you want to successfully win battles at the gyms. Evolving is similar to powering up, but your Pokémon will transform to another type with much more CP. For example, the Rattata evolves into the Raticate.

Evolving only requires candies from that certain type of Pokémon.

Use your Potions

Never go into a battle with a half-dead Pokémon! Use the potions and revives that you get from Pokestops to make sure your Pokémon are always ready to fight. As you level up, you will unlock better potions that heal more of each Pokémon.

To use a potion or revive, open your bag and click on the one you want to use. You will only see the Pokémon you can use each item on. Click them until they are in full health and ready for battle.

Swipe to Avoid Attacks

When in a battle, you can swipe the screen to help your Pokémon avoid attacks from his opponent. As soon as you swipe, you will want to get right back to tapping your opponent so that your Pokémon will deliver his own attacks to defeat the Pokémon and win!
