So you know how a couple weeks ago I posted about the Time Machine app and how you can win VIP tickets to go see Imagine Dragons at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City? Well I totally got ahold of some of those VIP tix and went to the concert with Mark! SCORE!
Okay, so the night didn’t go EXACTLY as we’d planned, but it was pretty darn fun, and Imagine Dragons were awesome. I’ll be honest, I hadn’t heard many of their songs before, and so it was a little bit weird to be going to their concert, but free tickets and a night away from the kids isn’t to be sneezed at! So we went, and it turns out I knew a TON of their songs – I just didn’t know it was THEM singing them!
Our evening began as we arrived early at the arena to pick up our tickets. Mark dropped me at the box office and went off to look for a parking spot. He ended up parking many blocks away downtown, but he ran back and we started our date night.
The VIP tickets allowed us access to a cool behind the scenes party area with lots of food and a bunch of booths from the charities/businesses involved in the Time Machine app.
To be honest, mostly we just kind of hung around eating and watching, but I did have a great chat with Kent Barton, father of Sophie Barton for whom Sophie’s Place was established. Kent spoke lovingly of his late daughter and how her memory lives on through the music shared with sick children throughout the country.
Leading up to the concert itself, we basically just took a lot of selfies and made out in dark corners when no one was looking.
When we’d had enough of being VIPs, we headed up to the arena to find our seats. I had a bit of a giggle when I realized that these particular Very Important Persons had the WORST seats in the house! Seriously, nosebleed is being generous! We were in the second to last row at the top of the stadium in the farthest possible point from the stage. We didn’t mind, though, as we’re not so young anymore, and I didn’t feel like dealing with all the young folk who would surely be jumping and dancing around if we were closer.
We did, however, bump into this guy who was the one who actually BUILT the Time Machine app, so it was pretty interesting to meet him. He and Mark started speaking geek to each other, but I just sat back and relaxed until show time.
The opening act was an incredible performer who I’d not heard of before but I know is probably already famous in younger circles – Halsey. She had an amazing voice and a real stage presence, and as soon as I get some sleep, I will be running off to download some of her music.
Finally the main event started, though it was a LOT later than we’d anticipated. I am embarrassed to say that we had a curfew for the evening since our babysitter had school the next day, and we realized pretty quickly that we weren’t going to get to stay for the whole concert. BOO!
Those songs we DID get to stay for, we loved. As I said before, I didn’t really know much about the band before the concert, but I recognized several of their songs, and those that I didn’t know were so catchy that I knew I’d be downloading them soon.
I was BLOWN AWAY by their cover of Forever Young, which had the entire arena singing along. This band is so talented, and I am seriously excited to try and see them again some day.
After about ten songs, we sadly had to make our getaway so that we could get back to our kids and relieve our sitter. When I looked up the set list it looks like we missed about seven songs, which is sad.
As we left the arena, we realized that it would take a long while to get back to our car since Mark had parked so far away. But thankfully there were some bicycle rickshaws waiting, and we were able to hop a ride!
What a perfect end to the evening! We had a blast, though we thought we were going to be killed in traffic several times on the five minute ride.
Still, when we got back to the car, we had a perfect view of downtown from the roof of the parking garage. Though our evening wasn’t quite what we expected, we had a BLAST and would do it again in a heartbeat.
Have you seen Imagine Dragons live? What did you think? What about Halsey?
