Rainy days are some of my favorite days. The days when you stare out the window at a sky of dusty rose, and you think about all the plans that you had that are now gone with the wind. Like practicing for tomorrow’s T-Ball match with the boys in the back yard. Or having a midweek barbecue just because. And yet, even with the weather scuppering our plans, there’s always fun to be had inside. From crafty fun with the kids to teaching them new songs from the back catalog of my own childhood, we make our rainy days count.
Sometimes the toys just don’t cut it. The kids want something new that gets their imaginations going. They settle in with a snack, and we raid my craft cupboard to find something fun. Today it was felt. Sheets of fuzzy fun in a myriad of colors that made them want to create. I got out the scissors and carefully cut the shapes they asked for so they could put together a scene that warmed my heart.
Clouds and sunshine and trees and grass. A picture of what they wanted to see out the window, even though our reality was much different. And then Dexter wanted a rainbow. “Cause after all the rain is gone, we get a pretty rainbow, mommy!” I offered to cut strips of colors from the leftover felt, but he wasn’t having any of it. He wanted his Pepperidge Farm® Goldfish® crackers to be the rainbow. He arranged them into order on a fluffy white cloud. He then proceeded to use his Goldfish crackers as leaves on the trees, as well as flowers and grass. He placed one flying high in the sky.
He wasn’t pleased when his little brother reached over and grabbed a handful of crackers and cheekily ate them. But it was fine. He just started over with a new scene, as colorful and fun as the first. This time, he told a story as he went: “Once upon a time, there were three brothers named Dexter, Daniel and Chester. They were playing by the trees at the park. And there was a big fluffy cloud, and they thought it would rain. And then the sun came out, and it didn’t rain. And they were happy. The End.”
When we’d tired of felt pictures, Dexter asked if he could count all of his Goldfish crackers. Who was I to damper his enthusiasm for learning? I quickly grabbed some spare paper and jotted down numbers, one through nine. I handed it to him, and he carefully counted out the appropriate amount of crackers for each number. For a four year old, he sure is smart!
Tomorrow, I’ve no doubt the sun will be out, and we’ll be back to playing outside. The kids will be covered in mud and grass, and we’ll resume our springtime family fun.
