Mom Fashion – Gwynnie Bee Review

by Katie Reed

Don't forget to share!

I’ve been seeing ads for Gwynnie Bee all over the place for a few years now. And I have always really wanted to try it. So when I found out they offer the first month free, I figured it was worth trying out. If you don’t know what it is, Gwynnie Bee is a site where you can have beautiful clothing delivered to your door, wear it and send it back. It’s like having a giant closet that is full of great stuff without having to buy it. They offer unlimited free shipping and exchanges for one flat fee every month. The price is based on how many items you choose to have at home at any one time.

Since it was free, I chose to have three outfits. I went through their extensive inventory and chose tons of cute dresses, pants, shirts and jackets that I thought would suit me, and I added them to my “closet.” Then I sat back and waited. Within a few days, the company had sent me three of the items I’d picked out.

Now I will say right now that Gwynnie Bee caters to the more plus-size demographic. They have sizes 10 – 32, and it is important to check the size charts for each item, as they may not be the same sizes you are used to if you usually buy your clothes at Target (like me!). But since I’m a larger size than I’ve been in a long time, I don’t want to commit to buying a whole new wardrobe of clothing that I hope won’t fit me in a few months. Gwynnie Bee is perfect for this.

Right now I’m a size 14, and at GB, a size 14 can also be known as an XL, 1X, 2X or even a 1 or 2. It can be confusing, but as long as you remember to check it against your measurements, you should be fine.

My very first batch of clothing included two dresses and a skirt. It’s up to you to style the outfits however you want, and for me that can be difficult. I’m not a fashion-savvy mama. I’ve got three boys who are often muddy and covered in snot, so I’m usually found in sweats or yoga pants. But I wanted to make a little more of an effort given that I’m feeling quite self-conscious with my extra weight.

I have to say, I didn’t love everything.

Let’s start with the skirt. It is a Pink Clove Floral Pencil Skirt. I LOVE the look of this type of skirt on a curvy woman. I think of Christina Hendricks in Mad Men, and I swoon. Sadly I don’t think I can quite pull it off with what I have on hand. I don’t have a lot of great shirts on hand, so I thought I’d try my bandage shirt (Vince Camuto blue stripe bandage top – $79 Nordstrom) for a bit of contrast. The stripes and florals seemed to clash in a cool way, which made it more fun. But really I don’t think it was that much of a win.

I wore some brown boots with it, but I think I’d rather have had some nice heels. I just don’t own any!

Next up was a Taylor Dresses V-Neck Lace Dress with Blush Lining. I thought this one would look really nice on me, but I actually ended up really hating it. It was just a smidge too short, and it didn’t fit quite right in the boobs. So I decided since it was so girly, I’d add a bit of an edge to it. I put on my black leather jacket (a $15 thrift store find!) and some biker boots that I actually bought for $20 at Dollar General! I also wore a string of black beads to continue the sort of rough girly theme. I call the look “Leather and Lace.”

I know I look kind of angry in this photo, and it was simply because I have a really bad sneeze reaction to the sun, and I was staring straight at it for all these photos! I think the dress was just a tiny bit too short for me, but I still think the look is a good one put together this way.

The final dress was an Evans Dress in Painterly Floral. This was by far my favorite outfit, and it worked perfectly for Easter Sunday! Plus, I’ve just dyed my hair pink, so it just made me feel very cute. I paired it with some cute flat sandals that I got at Nordstrom Rack and an old giant pearl look necklace I’ve had for years.

Forgive the weird background. I am not great at photo editing, and I was trying to erase my shadow on the background, and it looks a bit silly!

Anyway, as you can see the dress made me super happy and had me jumping around. My kids even got in on the action.

My boy, Daniel thought my impromptu cheerleading antics were so funny, so I tossed him around a little bit.

Obviously I’m no model. I am not even very good at fashion. It takes me forever to put an outfit together when it counts, and a subscription service like Gwynnie Bee is the kind of ideal solution for someone like me. The only thing I wish it had was the ability to choose certain outfits at certain times. Of course, the site does say that if you have a special request, you can email them and they will do their best to accommodate you.

GB sends along return bags so that as soon as you’re done with the outfits, you can send them back easily. Just drop it in a post box and wait for your next round to arrive. You can even check the clothes back in on the site so that they get your next outfits sent out super quick. AND, even better, if there’s something you receive that you absolutely LOVE and decide you want to keep, you can choose to buy it for a great discount. As of now I’m waiting for my second round of clothing. I’m hoping for a pair of jeans and a cute shirt this time, but since the majority of my closet is dresses, I am betting that’s what I’ll get.

For the record, here’s what I normally look like when I am trying to be cute.

What do you think? Do any of my “looks” resonate? What’s your opinion of Gwynnie Bee? What are your favorite places to shop for cute and flattering clothes?
