Our new house is beautiful. It really is everything we ever wanted. But some of the finishes aren’t exactly our style, and we have been slowly planning out exactly where we want to make changes. For me, one of the BIGGEST issues is the dining room. Because of it’s mostly open concept feel (it has one back wall and very little else), it is one of the first things you see when you walk in the house. The former owners did a strange sort of paint job involving yellow paint and some straw-colored stain… I’ve never seen anything quite like it, and while it is okay, I definitely want to paint over it sooner rather than later.
But there are always other things that need done when you have three little kids, so painting is something that will have to wait a while. And since we have an eat-in kitchen, this formal dining room doesn’t see much use anyway, so we’ve kind of made it the area where STUFF just gathers. It’s frustrating because, like I said, it’s one of the first things people see when they come over, and it seems to always be filled with junk.
Here’s how it looked a few days ago. Not terrible, but really just cluttered and boring.
So, I set out to try and cheer the room up. A sort of spring-cleaning and brightening to help me feel a bit better about it. At least until I can do a proper makeover with paint and such.
Obviously I didn’t want to spend too much, but I wanted to make a big impact. So I went where I always go when it’s time for me to decorate on a budget – Dollar General. Armed with my DG coupons, which I always make sure to download before a trip, I headed out to see what I could find.
As usual, I was impressed. Dollar General really does have some really cute decor that is perfect for moms on a budget. I got a great rug and some super adorable wall art that I knew would work well with my own pieces.
With a bit of cleaning, some clever rearranging of furniture, and a few adorable accent pieces, I think I did really well at sprucing up a formerly boring space!
And this is an old table that I had sitting in a random hallway. So I moved it here to work as a mini-buffet! I love the cute framed photos, and the length of fabric makes a cute little feature.
I really love all the accents for the walls. The cute ornate mirrors were a steal! And would you believe that many of the pieces I had on hand were also from Dollar General many years ago!
I think my favorite part of my mini-makeover is this cute coffee bar I made. I’ve been trying to figure out a use for the blue cabinet for ages. It’s really just been filled with junk for the last three months, so this gives it a great use. I can keep drink paraphernalia inside and the coffee maker on top!
The LOVE sign was a Valentine’s Day special, but I just think it is so cute! And I have lots of the metal cutout signs (also from DG) elsewhere in my house, but this one looks great right above the social hub – the coffee bar!
The baker’s rack was kind of useless since we moved here. We actually got it when we lived in Florida. It had been left by the former owners of our house, and it has been used in my craft room, our laundry room and our kitchen in various houses! I wanted to actually use it, so I set about cleaning it up, and voila!
The tiny baskets are great for holding napkins and plastic cutlery, and they were only $3 each! I even got out our fancy china to display! Though if I’m honest, I think we’ll have to get a proper hutch when we do our “real” makeover. I’m a little scared that it’s not stable enough.
With tiny kids with sticky, stained fingers, I wanted to find a tablecloth that was cute but durable. I found this amazing plastic lace tablecloth, and I knew it was perfect. I set it over a black cloth, and it just looks so nice. The creases aren’t as noticeable in person, and after a little while they will fade. But doesn’t it just add a really lovely pop??
And the centerpiece was SO easy to make. The glass bowl, glass stones and flowers were all in only $5! I filled the bowl with the stones and then cut off some plastic pink flowers from the bunch and made a really beautiful statement for my table. I LOVE it.
All in all, I am so pleased with my mini-makeover. It is the best room in my house right now, even with the funky paint! Save on home essentials with Dollar General! And don’t forget to check them out on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest for decorating/DIY ideas and more!
