About a year and a half ago, I got tired of driving a mini van. Okay, that’s not totally true. It wasn’t that I got tired of driving it, it’s just that I was tired of having to be stuck with one car in this family of five. Either I had to drive my husband to work every day, or he would take the car, leaving me with three kids for an entire day with no way to go anywhere. Because of the constant frustration, we decided to buy a second car.
The car we ended up getting was going to be “Mom’s Car.” The car that I would get to use for my own personal “Mom Errands.” Errands like going to Target and walking every aisle for three hours so I can get a break. Or putting on my favorite Unicorn leggings and heading to the gym so I can do some half-hearted pilates and browse Facebook on my phone. Priorities.
But the car we bought wasn’t really thought out well. I needed a car that could still occasionally fit my kids in it, navigate through the Utah mountains and offer some nice family-friendly safety features. Instead, I bought a cute little convertible, which I regretted the moment I drove it off the lot.
Ever since, I’ve been searching for the perfect mom car that would allow me to do everything from the school run to solo journeys near and far. And I’m pretty sure I finally found it!
A couple of weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to test out the 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 SE for a week. I can’t tell you how much I loved this surprising little car. While it wasn’t as fancy as some of the other cars I’ve reviewed, it was perfect for my needs. Seating five, with plenty of room to stretch out, it would fit all of us except for the fact that all three of my kids are still in car/booster seats. While all three seats did fit in the back, it was a little too close for comfort. I would definitely recommend it for older children, but with more than two little ones, it may be a little bit cozier than you’d like.
As is usual for Mitsubishi, there are tons of safety features which make it perfect for families. The backup camera is one of my favorite things in the world. It provides a wide-angle view, which is great for our little street that often has small children running up and down it. I love being able to see clearly whether any kids or animals or forgotten bicycles are in my way.
The backup camera is also amazing for parallel parking. While I consider myself a champion of parallel parking, it is often a little trickier in the winter when there are giant mounds of snow everywhere!
In addition to the five seats, there are SEVEN airbags. These include the standard front, front-seat mounted, and side-curtain airbags. But the Mirage adds a non-standard airbag underneath the driver’s side dashboard, which is designed to stabilize your lower body and knees during certain types of frontal collisions. This is an extra level of protection that stands out to me.
I also love the Active Stability Control sensors in this car. A few weeks ago, I was involved in a very minor accident in my current car. I was driving along our road in icier than normal conditions, and my car began to slide. When I hit the brakes, the car spun out of control and slid slowly into a stop sign. Neither the sign nor my car were damaged, but I resolved not to drive my car in snow again.
This never would have happened in the Mirage. The ASC system monitors the grip of each tire, and if the wheels begin to slip, it will communicate with the ABS to apply the brakes with the most traction, which would help to stay in control.
There are so many safety features in the Mirage that make me so confident that it is the safest car for my family and for me. But more than that, it’s a truly fun car to drive. It’s roomy and comfortable and totally perfect for moms on the go.
I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a comfortable sedan which is good on gas, can handle various terrains and is safe for the whole family.
Consider taking one for a test drive! I am definitely considering buying one soon!
