The No Poo Project

by Katie Reed

Have you ever thought about the possibility of going No Poo? No, it has nothing to do with your bowels, I promise! Instead, it is the idea of going without shampoo anymore. The idea has intrigued me for YEARS, and I’ve spent a heck of a long time wanting to try it. Six or seven years ago, I gave it a go, but I only made it three days before succumbing to vanity and going straight back to the chemical goodness of my favorite shampoo brand.

But one of my New Years resolutions for 2014 is a chemical detox. Not just detoxing through what I eat and drink, but detoxing from all chemicals. And that means no shampoos, conditioners, deodorants, lotions, products, etc. Makeup will be allowed, but my hope is that eventually I can phase out all the non-organic, all natural products in my collection.

So the first stage in my detox is getting rid of my hair regimen. And I’ll be honest – it is BRUTAL. Right now, I’m on Day 12, and I’m going a little crazy. But I feel it is important to stick to it, and so I am going to do so. And since I’m all about sharing things, I will be chronicling my progress here.

So I have been trying to take photos and keep a little diary each day, and I will try to update once a week for a while so you can see what I’m doing and how I fare.

Here is week one, in a nutshell.

no poo week one diary

So there you go. A week worth of No Poo. As I said, I’m actually on Day 12 now, so once I finish my second week, I’ll update again. I even have a video to share of my experience with Henna Hair Dye! We shall see how it turns out!

Have you ever tried No Poo? Did you like it? How long did you/have you lasted? I’m so curious!

Katie,
I’m really interested in hearing about week 2 of your experiment. I’ve heard that after the first week or 2 of going no poo your hair gets used to it and actually looks better/healthier than it did before. I haven’t gone no poo, but I’ve switched to homemade shampoo with castile soap. Other than the shampoo being extremely watery, it works quite well.

Hi Amber. I am hoping that it will get to the point soon where it starts looking and feeling a lot better. I’ve read it can take 3 – 4 months before it reaches that stage. But I think I’m already really happy with how its going. It takes some effort to keep it feeling and looking clean, but it’s not as hard as the first few days. 🙂 I’ve heard good things about castile soap, and I definitely think homemade shampoo is a great step forward. I am going to be trying some different concoctions that I’ve read about and will see how they work on my hair. 🙂 Thanks for commenting!
