Pregnancy Diary – 34 Weeks

34 weeks

So I’m 34 weeks pregnant, a milestone I wasn’t sure I would hit at all! Every week I give a little squee of delight when I jump (okay, awkwardly roll) out of bed in the morning of a new week. And today was no exception. I’ve been taking it day by day for the last little while, which has seemed the right thing to do. I didn’t want to plan too far in the future just in case things didn’t happen the way I wanted.

Anyway, 34 weeks is good!

I had my weekly appointment with my regular OB today, and while it was a somewhat frustrating appointment (aren’t they all??), I did at least get a few answers and a weight off of my mind!

When I got there, I did the usual weight and urine tests (I’ve lost another half a pound, frustratingly). I then was accosted by Dr Swoboda who was concerned that my ongoing cough was not yet gone. She was worried about flu, and I told her that though Dexter had just got over Influenza B, I had been tested and come out negative. She still insisted on making me wear a mask so that I wouldn’t spread my germs around. It was quite uncomfortable and made it even harder to breathe, which obviously made me cough more. *sigh*

I did manage to snap a photo, though, which kind of looks like a still out of a horror movie. I was laying down flat on my back for my Non Stress Test at the time, and this was between coughs, thankfully.

Anyway, they led me into a room to wait for the doctor, but as I’d been yelled at two weeks ago when I hadn’t reminded them I needed an NST, I made sure to remind them, and I was sent to the NST room instead.

Hooked up to the machine, I had my blood pressure taken (118/60) and my temperature, as well (98.3). Then I was left alone with my thoughts.

I’ll admit, my thoughts were all about how I was going to demand answers and clarifications from last week’s appointment. But those thoughts were interrupted by some of the biggest contractions I’d had so far. I think there were six in total (they forgot about me for a while and left me a lot longer than usual), and I was able to snap a pic of the readout from the bed, but it’s not a great photo.

contractions

Still, you can see that they’re not small and they lasted around 15 – 20 seconds each. Whew!

Eventually, the doc came back in and she was armed with a prescription. She said she’d heard my cough from down the hall, and everyone was talking about it, and they can’t believe it is just bronchitis. She was prescribing a Z-Pak (Azithromycin), as, in her words, “From our experience with your earlier infections, your body just doesn’t recover as easily as others, and you tend to need at LEAST two bouts of antibiotics to get through them.”

Yah, that sounds about right. Anyway, hopefully it’ll work!

She then said the baby looked good on the monitor and asked if I had any questions. Well, heck yah I do!

So I talked to her about last week’s appointment and asked how worried I should be that the baby isn’t growing properly and is behind and such.

She said that yes, the baby is behind schedule and does not seem to be getting what he needs. But she said that it is only an emergency if he is below the 10th percentile, and our little man is in the 29th right now. So it’s not terribly worrying, but the next scan will determine HOW worried we should be. She said that their goal (along with Dr Al Malt) is to get me to 37 weeks. If we can get there, even if he’s small, they will be a LOT happier. But she said that the ideal would be to get to 39 weeks, and they will probably induce at that point.

She said that should the next scan not show improvement, they will take dopplers of the brain and abdomen, and dependent on the results, they may induce right away. It’s a tricky line to walk, and they just have to decide whether the baby is better inside or outside.

So I guess I have two more weeks of waiting, but at least I know I probably won’t go past 39 weeks, which is only five weeks away! Eep!

The long and the short of it is that everything hinges on what happens at my 36 week appointment. Weirdly, I don’t have one for 35 weeks! But 36 weeks I have to see BOTH sets of doctors, which will be interesting.

Anyway, that’s it. Not a huge amount of answers, but definitely feeling better about the baby’s size. I asked if there was anything I could eat or drink to help the baby put on weight, and Dr Kjerulff suggested Boost or Ensure as extra calories that might help. So that’s what I’ll be drinking for the next two weeks!
