With three kids of my own, I fancy myself a bit of an expert on what baby products are truly necessary for a new mom and which ones are more of a luxury. I’m also pretty good at advising about which items are utterly and completely useless. I come by this knowledge honorably, for when my first son was born nearly five years ago, I was living in a foreign country with no relatives or friends to turn to for advice. As such, my husband and I ended up buying out our local baby store and ended up with a pile of products we never ended up using. Boy that sales girl saw us coming!
I guess because of this (or maybe in spite of it!) I was invited along when a couple of our close friends went to register for their first child at Babies “R” Us. While I knew that Babies “R” Us has a great online registry, I advised them that it was best to go in-store for the process. That way they could actually speak to a representative that could give them the low-down on all that the store has to offer for parents, get some discounts and free gifts, AND (most importantly) see all the products in person and choose what they wanted together.
We headed out early on a Sunday morning, Ashley having booked her appointment online with their simple online reservations. We were all a bit bleary-eyed when we arrived, and comments were made about the early hour (it was 10 AM!). Jason and Ashley sat down with the Personal Registry Partner, and while Ash filled out some quick paperwork (with name, due date, etc), the friendly Personal Registry Partner bantered with the three of us.
Our Personal Registry Partner explained all about how the registry worked, as well as the many MANY benefits it offered to parents. You can see the full list of benefits on their site, but some of the most exciting ones were:
- Endless Earnings where you can earn up to 10% on all purchases made from your registry
- Expert Advice from your Personal Registry Partner
- Pre & Postnatal Classes to help you prepare for your new baby and ask questions once you have him
- Easy & Convenient registry returns
- Scanning Products to add to your registry (this was probably the most fun for Jason and Ashley)
The registry assistant then let us loose with a scanner and explained where we should start in the store and how scanning everything that they MIGHT want was so important. She suggested they start with the toys and clothes, move toward bedding and furniture and finish up with all the odds end ends like bottles, diapers, etc. She warned that it was VERY easy to get caught up scanning all the tiny little things, and if we started there we’d be too tired to make it to the big stuff!
As we made our way around, I offered suggestions on practical items, and Ashley occasionally scanned something she thought was cute or necessary. But as she got used to scanning things, she really started letting loose. She and Jason began grabbing all the books, toys, clothes and bedding off the shelves and scanning with joy. They weren’t just grabbing newborn stuff, either – they were thinking ahead to the future and scanning everything they might ever want to enjoy with their new son!
As I made my way around the store with them, I had to admit I started to get a bit broody. I always get a bit excited around baby stuff, and I started imagining myself shopping for my own new baby. But since I have three already and no plans for another as yet, I had to swallow down my jealousy and continue on around the store.
We admired the many rocking chairs, cribs, changing tables, etc on offer, and when she couldn’t decide between two bedroom sets, I suggested she add them both! Problem solved!
Finally we ended up back with all the little odds and ends that the Personal Registry Partner had spoken to us about. And sure enough, it’s where we spent the most amount of time. It was here that I felt my presence was truly helpful, as I had all sorts of advice on bottles, sanitizers, breast pumps, etc. I did my best to answer questions without offering unsolicited advice, and hopefully it was helpful to the soon to be parents.
Finally, after about two hours, we made our way back to the front. By this point, they had several items in their cart, and the scanner was running low on batteries. We sure put it through its paces! Our lovely registry assistant was waiting for us at the front, and she had a nice bag of goodies for the new mom and dad- discount cards, a gift card, some helpful lists, a sample bottle and more!
She explained that they could access their registry any time online, adding to it or sharing with friends and family. She reminded them to sign up for one of the awesome classes and to download the Babies “R” Us Registry App (iOS only). The app allows you to create or manage your registry, share it with family and friends, search for products and access checklists to help prepare for the new baby!
She also told us about the Registry Party on January 16th from 11am to 12pm in all Babies “R” Us standalone stores. It will feature games, giveaways and personalized registry help for the new mom and dad!
All in all, I think that it was a great day for Ashley and Jason, and I know that they were lucky enough to have LOADS of items from their wishlist show up at their baby shower! And if they should need to return anything, I know they’ll find it a simple and straightforward process, as Babies “R” Us have some of the most amazing customer service.
