This blog post was sponsored by Coca-Cola but the opinions are completely my own based on my experience.
I know that most people are sick of the whole “New Year, New Me” stuff by now. We’re a couple weeks in, and now is the time when we see a lot of people giving up on their plans for a healthier life. As for me, I didn’t actually start my new year health kick until January 9th, so I’m one of the lucky ones that hasn’t burnt out yet! I think a lot of the problems that people have is that they try too hard to completely change their lives. They cut out so many food groups or too many things that they love, and they are left screaming inside of their own heads. Then, when they inevitably indulge one of their overwhelming cravings, they simply give up all together, considering themselves a diet failure.
Well that’s not me.
Or at least, it is not me anymore. I personally have a weight goal that I would like to hit this year. I don’t delude myself that I’ll get there in a month or two or even six. I have a good 60 lbs I’d like to lose, and it’s going to take time and determination. I’m in an active weight loss stage right now. And it’s hard! For the last week, I’ve been counting calories and writing down everything I eat and drink in an effort to figure out where my calories are going. I have cut out a few empty calories that I know are making it harder to lose weight (like my beloved flavored lattes that I used to drink every single day!), and I have been trying to drink a TON more water. And while I’m not currently indulging in sweet treats or comfort foods, I am also not berating myself if I decide to have something other than salad.
Aside from my own weight loss goals, I also am working toward better fitness. This is HARD. I am not a person who has EVER exercised. I enjoy being outdoors, hiking or snowboarding or chasing the kids. But actual cardio or strength training in a gym? Not for me! But I know I will see greater results if I add in exercise to my daily routine. Even something like running up and down my stairs (all FOUR flights of them!!) a few times leaves me breathless and sweaty. But if I keep going, I know I will see a major improvement, not just in my weight but in my overall health. It sucks to be out of breath every time I have to go get the baby out of his crib!
To help me keep track of my exercise and fitness goals, I got sent an awesome Misfit wearable device that is so cute and TOTALLY amazing. It even tracks your sleep!
Besides myself, I have a husband and three little boys to think of. It’s no secret that my kids are (like every kid I know) obsessed with chocolate and treats. And unfortunately, lately it has got way out of hand. My oldest son will be 5 years old next month, and he is definitely my pickiest eater. He hates any fruits or veggies, barely eats meat and basically lives on cheese quesadillas, boxed mac & cheese and occasionally some fish sticks. Nightmare! So in an effort to lead by example, part of my new healthy life is introducing them to better and healthier options of their favorite things.
We ended up going for a big family shop at our local Albertsons, and there we found an abundance of amazing opportunities to teach them about good eating. The boys all LOVE milk, especially chocolate milk, so we bought a couple of bottles of Fairlife milk, which is AMAZINGLY tasty and totally healthy. It’s unfiltered, has 50% more protein and 30% more calcium! Plus it is from cows not treated with rBST. The chocolate variety is also lower in fat and seriously tastes AH-MAZING. My kids call it their chocolate milkshake!
We also found one of my favorite things, Simply Orange, which is a brand of orange juice that will knock your socks off! I LOVE orange juice myself, but my hubby isn’t necessarily the biggest fan of it. So I bought various varieties for him to try. They have varieties with banana or mango, and they also make a variety of lemonade flavors, as well. My husband REALLY loved the banana Simply Orange, and I really couldn’t blame him.
As a family, we’re also big fans of Odwalla Smoothies, which are bottled blends of delicious 100% fruit juices and pulps! Since my oldest son HATES fruits and vegetables, we have been giving him these instead, and he LOVES them. He thinks they are fruity milkshakes, and I don’t argue! In fact, he’s now even made a huge stride in that he has started eating bananas! I can’t tell you how happy it makes me!!
All in all, living healthier is all about putting in the effort to do it. Finding awesome ways of getting the family on board is really important. Eating healthy is now a family affair, and we keep our fridge stocked with a better quality of products so that there’s never an excuse to turn to junk. Now, when I am feeling peckish, I know I can turn to the fridge and grab a boiled egg or a baggie of carrots and hummus. Preparation is everything.
