Having had three children myself, I can tell you that disseminating the information out there about which products are necessary vs which products will sit in a drawer can be tough. Every mom has her go-to products that she can’t imagine living without, but it seems like it’s different for every one of us. The mom who can’t imagine living without her diaper genie scoffs at the mother who needs the wipe warmer. But there are some things that most new moms will tell you are godsends – like devices that will help to soothe a baby or put him to sleep.
With that in mind, I’ve created my Top Five Best Buys for Soothing a New Baby.
5. A Bouncy Chair
These are different depending on the brand, but they generally look like a little mini-hammock hooked up to a thick wire base. Some come with a toy bar so the baby has something to reach for/play with, and most of them are battery-powered to vibrate and/or play music. We have had one for each of our kids, and I would never be without it for a newborn. It helps them so much when they are fussy, and unlike some of the louder toys they get later in their babyhood, the calming music will soothe the parents as much as the child!

4. A Musical Mobile
There are literally hundreds if not thousands of mobiles available out there for a new baby. Whether you have one specially made or buy one off the shelf, these are an awesome way to mesmerize a tired baby. Hook it up to the crib, and watch as your baby is immediately calmed by the moving parts and gentle music.
3. A Baby Swing
This is seriously one of the greatest inventions of all time when it comes to babies. Baby swings have come a long way–even through the last few years since I had my first! Baby Dexter had a swing that sat close to the ground and swung forward and backward gently on its own. He loved it, and so did we. But by the time baby Daniel came along just two years later, he had a swing that swung back and forth, left and right, at different speeds and with different musical choices! It was amazing! The kid slept in that thing for what seemed like years. In reality it was only a few months since he ended up throwing himself out of it a few times, and we realized he was a little bit too mobile for it. But for a while there it was magic!

2. A Musical Night Light Projector
These are really and truly cool. They work for babies, but they also are extremely helpful as your child gets older and starts developing fear of the dark. We bought one that threw beautiful and colorful shapes across the ceiling as classical music played softly through the room. It’s got the same sort of effect as a mobile, but it’s so much more. It has the ability to shut off by itself after a set time, so it’s perfect for getting the baby to sleep. And the one we had also turned on if it sensed noise, so as soon as the baby would fuss, he’d get another dose of calming music. These are awesome!
1. A Musical Animal
Babies love to be held and to hold on to something. It gives them comfort. So giving them a small stuffed animal or other soft toy to hold is a great way to keep them happy. And there’s nothing better than when that new stuffed friend can also play music. Dexter had the most incredible musical monkey when he was a baby, and he slept with it every single day. It was the only way he would take a nap! Each of my boys has had their own version of a musical friend, and I count them among my great life-savers since so often I could not escape holding them constantly.

I hope that these suggestions will help if you are thinking about what to buy for your baby or a friend or family member’s new arrival. Remember that all of these items are battery-powered, and it is important to have a good stash of batteries on hand to get them working. My favorite is Duracell because they *last longer than 99% of devices vs. the next leading competitive brand. If you’ve ever gone to look for a battery and found that it’s been sitting so long in a drawer that it’s basically dead, you’ll appreciate that little feature!
